Dashboard / Gauge Issues - 2005 Grand Caravan
Okay -
I bought my 05 Dodge Caravan about 2 years ago.
In the beginning, the Fuel, Speed & Temp gauges would go all the way and back when I started the car.
Didn't take any notice of it.
Later I started noticing the mileage (digital) and the dome lights flickering ever so slightly.
Didn't take any notice of it.
Just over a year ago the battery died on me one morning when I went to start the car. I took it to Canadian Tire (I'm in Canada) and they replaced the battery. The flickering lights as well as the fluctuating gauges at start-up stopped happening. Therefore I assumed it to be fixed due to the battery.
This January I started noticing the lights flickering again, but what would also happen was when I drove, hit the gas the gauges would fluctuate and the dashboard lights would also start flashing, the radio clock would also do the same. The only time it would stop doing that was when I signaled or when I turned the headlights on which in turn would turn the dashboard lights on.
Needless to say, I freaked out. (I have to small children in the car).
I took it to the Dodge dealership and they pointed out that the battery I had installed was too small and that I needed to replace it.
Okay - I did that. A little while after that vehicle started to do that same thing again with the dashboard as well as the radio etc. gauges fluctuating when I hit the gas.
I took it back to the dealership - they replaced the battery again stating the one they replaced earlier was faulty.
Okay - 1 month later (NOW) the same thing is happening again.
I took it to the dealership again and they spent 2 hours looking into it and came up with ... Nothing!
Please some one help me here.
Thanks

I found this. Is this what you were writing about?

Vehicle Issue Headlamps and MIC/cluster illumination flicker or flash while driving down the road.;In some cases turning on the rear window defroster or heater blower motor causes the illumination problem to go away. Additionally in some cases, while driving, the engine will surge at the same time the lamp flicker or flash is occuring. Normally there are no codes.
System or Component Erratic Operation / Fluctuates,Flickers / Flashing;Customer Concern (No DTCs);Instrument Panel / Cluster,Illumination System,Lamps / Lighting,Headlamps;Cold Start (After 8 hour Soak),During Warm Up;Yes - Intermittent
Recommendation Try swapping a Battery from a known good vehicle. In one case the Battery tested good with the test equipment recommended and the technician replaced it anyway fixing the problem.

I've seen these flickering lights threads come up now and then sometimes associated with the gauges. Alternators and batteries seem to be the most common first attempts and usually don't work. Some have changed PCMs because it has the voltage regulator in it. Some have changed battery cables. Trouble is most of those threads, true to form, never end with the fix. One that did caught my attention.
Don't recall if it was on this forum or another one. The fix amounted to running a second cable off the positive battery connection, piggy backing the first, to the main battery power connection on the IPM. He had gone through a lot of parts changing and testing then decided to try this and it worked. That's not to say it will fix everyones flickering lights.
Another possibility is a parasitic battery drain meaning something is drawing power or more power than it should when the van is off. This can lead to a weak battery and electrical glitches you are seeing. Considering your van can work fine for several months tells me it would be a small drain. This came to mind because of your history of battery changes. They change a battery, it seems to work fine for a while then it starts again. This can be found by connecting an ammeter in series with the disconnected negative battery cable and the battery post. Let the van sit twenty minutes after disconnecting the battery then check the meter reading. If it's above the general limit, I'll say 30 milliampers, you have a drain. Next step is to pull fuses till the drain disappears. That fuse is the circuit with the problem.
On the other hand, batteries naturally loose power over time. Though this drop may be normal, a bad ground or power connection can amplify it's effects.
