The alternator pulley has a bearing, clutch and torsion spring system in it. It wears out over time and causes the noise.

Were you able rent the tool to replace the pully?

I'm ready to do mine, but I don't want to pay 100 bucks for the puller kit. Rock Auto has the ADP for 50 bucks...if I can rent the tools then I'm golden.
