Amount of fluid in a trany

I have just finished changing a leaking gasket and replacing the filter on a grand caravan - 97 - 3.8 Lt. Auto transmission - - it's one of the overdrive versions
Here is my problem - the manual quotes 4 quarts or a little more to refill the trans. The stick was not showing any at 4.5 quarts - which the manual seemed to allude to. So I finally emptied the catch pan and found a little more than 5 in the pan .
Is this feasible ?
Do I have the wrong stick?

Thanks to the forum - - - -
I've been a lurker and have learned much from this group.
I will try to get more involved.
So I will fill the trany up to the right marks.
Another problem - - - as I was cleaning the trany pan I noticed what looked like water in the bottom - not much - I have also just changed out the radiator as the previous one was shot.
What problems could arise from H2o in the trans oil?
Thanks again - I will sleep alot better tonight.

Tizzy1 - - Once again thanks to you and all
The fluid was not milky and I guess that I should have known that - as water would have been emulsified . The bottom of the pan did look strange though - I've actually never messed with an auto trans - the learning curve is ever lengthening.
Thanks again folks - it was another beautiful day in Portland - and I guess the reason I comment on a good day is because we haven't had many - not much sun out here.
