Glass Removal
I need to remove the rear side window on a 2000 Dodge Caravan. This door is right behind the drivers door and it slides open. It is privacy glass and I have removed the panel. The trim has been removed and also the 10mm bolts that appear to hold the glass in place has been removed. The glass still doesn't come out. I am afraid to pry to hard because I may break it.... I have a heat gun but not sure if that will damage the privacy glass....I would appreciate any advise....Thanks
The nuts are to pull it flush to the body after the sealant has been applied. If you have no experience in doing glass you won't get it out without breaking it. Why are you trying to take it out anyway?
We bought the van and it had been wrecked. I want to beat the door back out so it will close flush but I'm afraid I will shatter the glass if I hammer the door the way it will need to be hammered....I'm not trying to make it "pretty" or even functional we just need a car on the road and I need this door to close to make it road legal... I'm purchasing a used drivers door but I'm hoping to get this door shut for good and leave it... do you think the heat from a heat gun and a razor knife would get it removed? ....at this point I feel I have nothing to lose by simply trying.....
You may need a deeper knife than the standard razor knife. Just cut along the edges but DON'T PRY. Use 6MM Butyl tape to go back together, and torque the nuts to 30 in lbs. You'll have to make 3 or 4 rounds until they are all seated. Try to have it in a warm place when you go back together or at least have the inside heater blasting so the door and glass will be warm.

Yay....I just removed the door...I used a long kitchen knife and a heat gun....Now I have another problem...How to get all the black goo off of the kitchen knife and slip it back in the kitchen drawer before the wife finds out :-)
.....Thanks for the help guys....I will check around for some 6mm Butyl tape to reassemble...Would NAPA have it ya think?
