Default 2004 Dodge Caravan SXT Oxygen Sensor/Whining Noise from Steering Wheel

Hello all,

I have a 2004 Dodge Caravan SXT with 75,000 miles. My check engine light came on last week and I took it to Autozone to find out what the code is. The code read that it was the upper O2 sensor that was faulty.

I then purchased a Bosch O2 sensor from Autozone. I took it to my mechanic and he changed it. After changing it, after I drive the van for a few miles the check engine light came back on. I took it back to him and he reset it. Everything was fine until the next day the light came back on.

I went to the dealer and they stated that I need to install the original O2 sensor as Dodge Caravans are not compatible with some aftermarket parts. I wasn't sure if this was legit or if they were just telling me this so I could buy their part. They said that Bosch is a great company for parts however when changing the sensor and spark plugs, its best to utilize original parts. Have any of you encountered this problem and is it true that we need to use original Dodge parts?

My second problem is that when I go for long drives (and not necessarily an hour or so) I hear a loud whining noise coming from my power steering. This only happens when I drive the van for long periods. The dealership stated that I may need to do a power steering flush first, and if this doesn't solve the problem than I need to change the filter inside the power steering mechanism. Again, I'm looking for anyone that has had this same problem on their van.

I look forward to your help and advice. Thank you!

Welcome to DF
Yes, I have seen a lot of problems with aftermarket o2 sensors and cam and crank sensors too. Do you know what the code was for the failed o2 sensor?

2nd problem, replace the power steering reservoir. The screen at the bottom is causing the whinning sound. and replace the power steering fluid with ATF+4.

Hello Master Tech,

Thanks you for your reply. Sorry it has taken this long to get back to you with the holidays here. I got 2 codes from Autozone. The first one is P0032 which deals with the o2 sensor. The second code is P0132 which is also the heated oxygen sensor, bank 1 sensor 1.

I went to the Dodge dealer and did get the original o2 sensor and changed it out from the aftermarket one. Everything was fine until the check engine light came back on last week. What else do you think could be the problem?

In regard to the whining noise, can I use aftermarket parts or is it better to get parts from the Dodge dealership as well? When I went to the dealership the rep mentioned that its better to use Dodge OE parts because these vans are notorious for not being compatible with aftermarket parts.

Thanks!
