You can get scanners at the local O'Reilly's or AutoZone starting around $69. A good investment if you are going to work on your own vehicle. Pay once and it's free after that.

Unfortunately the **** State Banned code reading practice by part stores. You can get a Code reader as low as $30 Online from Amazon.com, it will be a great tool to have as long as you own cars.
For example
http://www.amazon.com/Autel-MaxiScan...2796271&sr=8-1

If you want one that's more powerful
http://www.amazon.com/OTC-Bilingual-...796469&sr=8-26

Is there a preferred scanner out there that works well for the home mechanic?

It depends on what type of work are you planning to do, and what's your budget. There is no One size fits all wrench. If you are planning to do more than engine code reading, and even do ABS, AirBag, Body electrical, you are looking at $500+ equipment, and it will be Manufacturer specific.

If All you want to do is Check Engine Light type of things, and have an older car without all these eletrical mumbo jumbo, the scanner I recommended above is good.

Scanner is like a Wrench, it only does a Specific job. And expensive scanner is not really a investment unless you are always working cars, it might to cheaper to pay a shop a small diagnostic fee to use their scanner if you only work on 1 or 2 cars of your own.

I found a place nearby that would do the scan for me.
The results are;

transmission
P1781 OD Pressure switch ckt.
P0732 output speed sensor error
P0732 gear ratio error in second

abs
36 buss comm error
17 r rear speed sensor error
15 l rear speed sensor error

body

auto mirror sense input failure

I think I will start with output speed sensor on the trans and see where that leads me.

Replaced the speed sensor. Now the speedo works properly. Now if I can just figure out why the motor just dies, with no lights!
