Default '06 caravan intermittent heat

I've had this van since '08 and it's been great for us (other then a $1200 steering rack). The problem is that the heater isn't throwing any heat sometimes. Engine temp is normal, playing with the temp selector usually won't work. It'll just start working, then stop and go again. I live in Saskatchewan and it's mind numbingly cold. In the summertime it did this with tue a/c, seemed to get stuck on heat. But only did it once. Is the blend door hard to get at? Is there a diagnostic that can be done?
Thanks!

Ok, I found the diy on the diagnostic, but I have a question before I do it. I have to run the cooldown test before doing the other tests, but my a/c quit in the Kate summer (compressor blew out), will that have to be taken care of before it will let me do the other tests?

is your reservoir full of coolant?

if not have you checked to see if there is any drips comming from your water pump,

my 06 the reservoir was really slowly coolant, and no drops apearing on the ground, I looked under and I could see a snot ball of dried coolant on the weep hole of the water pump

Edit I also had my rack replaced,

I can't see any drips or any sign of leaking. The rad and bottle are both full.
