Default a/c does not work

a couple of months ago the a/c in my dodge grand caravan stopped working. when i check it out there was smoke comming from the compressor. i have checked to see if there is still freeon in the systmem and there is. i dont think its the compressor because there is still freeon in the system. any ideas would be helpful.

I am going to assume the model year is somewhere between 2001 - 2003 ish. Very common, so much in fact that the compressor warrenty was extended to 7/70, which I am sure you are over. The compressor would fail internally from lack of oil and the clutch would melt down. There were updated suction and discharge lines, a drier/filter and a compressor sold in a kit for that problem. If the compressor grenaded bad enough, you had to replace the h-valves as well.
