fuel level sending unit code po461
anyone have this code/problem, its the inlaws 2007 grand caravan 3.8 only 40,000 miles. had the code checked at the local O'REILLYS auto part store that i deal with.
they drove to see us in texas from pennsylvania for a few months.
i just dont want them to have any problems on their travels.
code has really no fix other than check wires/grounds(fuel gauge works)
i will look at it on saturday, just wondering if anyone has any info on this?? or had same problem. what was your fix/find?? thank you

P0460 through P0465 deal with fuel level sensor problems. This website lists an explanation for a P0463 code but it applies to the P0461 code as well. http://www.obd-codes.com/p0463
It is only going to effect fuel level indications on the instrument cluster gauge so they should be able to wait till they get home to deal with it. If the fuel level indication is erratic they can judge when to fill up by the odometer reading.
Looking at a wiring diagram the signal goes from the level sensor in the tank to the Body Control Module (BCM) then via the PCI data bus to the instrument cluster. As you've read wiring and connections at the pump would be the first thing to check. From reading forums for years by far and away the usual culprit is a bad level sensor. It is part of the fuel pump assembly in the fuel tank so that would mean a fuel pump change. Last would be a BCM. It's rare but BCMs can cause this.
You can test the gauge using the procedure in post #17 in this link titled "Diagnostics and Testing - Self Diagnostics". https://dodgeforum.com/forum/dodge-c...rmation-2.html If it doesn't work at all try holding the trip button then turn the key to on/run.
