2002 Dodge Grand Caravan
I just bought a 2002 Dodge Caravan. After having it 3 days my check engine light came on. I drove about an hour home no issues. was home for about an hour and headed out after doing maybe 5 miles the car stalled. At first it wouldn't restart. after about 5-10 minutes it restarted. It ran fine for about a week and stalled again. This time I was out running errors so I had be driving off and on for about 2 hours and it stalled when I was coming to a stop at a red light. This time after about 40 min it still wouldn't start. I had it towed to a garaged and of course it started right up for them. The code they got for the check engine was because the gas cap was not put on tight. They kept it for 3 days but could not get it to stall. The check engine light is off. I love this van but concerned it will keep stalling. The place I bought it from will pay for the repair but the can't if I don't know what needs fixing. Could somehow the car stall because of the check engine light and the gas cap not on right? Any suggestions?
Gas cap cause a stall? No. Does it stall only when coming to a stop or at anytime? Does it stumble/hesitate before it stalls or is it sudden? Don't suppose you got any maintenance history with the van? Which engine?
Could be any number of things. Fuel pump, coil, MAP sensor and on and on. High on my list especially if it's stalling at anytime would be the camshaft and/or crankshaft sensors. They will cause out of the blue stalling and often won't throw a code.
Next time it stalls cycle the key from off to on (not start) 3 times then leave it on. Read your codes if any off the odometer display. If able try checking for spark and fuel. You're loosing one or the other or both.

First time I was going about 35 going down the road the second time I was coming to a stop. No sputtering and jolting just stopped.
I read something about if it's a relay that it will restart once the relay cools down because when it does it will reset. If it is a relay could the fact that the car was running a lot longer and the relay would have been hotter before the second time it stall be why it took longer to restart because it took longer to cool down.
Sorry for all the questions. Trying to figure this out. I don't dare take it too far because Im afraid of getting stuck somewhere.
