Default Nivomat self adjusting rear shocks

I have a 2ooo Grand Caravan Sport with a leaking rear shock. I want to replace both rear shocks but the price is over $500 for parts alone. Can I replace them with a standard shock without doing any harm or sacrificing drivability?

I replaced them on our van with Monroe heavy duty shocks, not realizing that we had Ninovats. Some would say that the Ninovats are part of the springs and replacing them with something other than Ninovats will change the way the van rides. I didn't notice that at all for what it's worth.
