Question Whirring Transmission that won't go?

Wife was returning home in our 1996 Grand Caravan (3.3L engine and 4 speed auto) when she stopped at a red light. When the light changed she accelerated normally, but once up to about 20mph, the tranny felt like is disengaged and started making a whirring sound. She nursed it into a parking lot and left it. I returned and found that it will drive, but after a certain speed the tranny seems to slip and it whirs even in park and neutral. Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be? Solenoids, TCM, sensors, or is the tranny just completely shot? Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Joe

Is the check engine light on? Do you feel after the 2nd gear shift the problems start?

No CEL. I would say that the slippage occurs after the second gear shift. First gear seems to be okay. I'm not sure if it shifted (or attempted to) from sceond to third before the tranny seemed to lose it's grip. Also, the van will still engage and go in reverse just fine.
