horn and cruise not work dodge caravan 2000

 

Posted in your other thread. Possibly clockspring in steering wheel if fuses check out ok.

 

I would say its 90% the clock spring. They are a bit pricey but are easy to install.

 

Clocksprings are a free lifetime replacement item under a safety recall for all 96 through 2000 Chrysler Corp minivans. It's a coiled ribbon wire harness inside a plastic case mounted under the horn pad on the steering column that extends and retracts as you turn.

 

Sources? How can we be so sure without some form of proof or something?

 

Proof? It's listed on the NHTSA website - the guys who issue recalls. 96-97 models fall under a different but identical recall. It's pretty much common knowledge to those who frequent any Chrysler corp forum. It's been in effect since around 2004.

Summary:
ON CERTAIN MINIVANS, THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG MAY BECOME DISABLED DUE TO A FAILURE OF THE CLOCKSPRING, WHICH IS LOCATED IN THE HUB OF THE STEERING WHEEL.

Consequence:
THIS CONDITION WILL MANIFEST ITSELF THROUGH ILLUMINATION OF THE AIR BAG WARNING LAMP, AND COULD EVENTUALLY RESULT IN A DRIVER'S AIR BAG OPEN CIRCUIT, IF THE PART IS NOT REPLACED IN A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME.

Remedy:
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE CLOCKSPRING ASSEMBLY ON ALL COVERED VEHICLES WITH 70,000 MILES OR LESS. FOR THOSE VEHICLES WITH MORE THAN 70,000 MILES, DAIMLERCHRYSLER WILL OFFER AN EXTENDED LIFETIME WARRANTY UNDER WHICH IT WILL REPLACE THE CLOCKSPRING AT NO CHARGE IF IT FAILS. DAIMLERCHRYSLER WILL ALSO REIMBURSE OWNERS WHO HAVE PAID TO HAVE THE CLOCKSPRING REPLACED ON THEIR VEHICLES. THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 12, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT DAIMLERCHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.

I didn't mean to insult you. I was only requesting some proof be shown. I could have easily Googled it but its good to have on here for others who aren't as computer savvy.

 

Ya that does sound like I took offense. In reality, no offense taken. I'd sure be happier taking a copy of the recall with me to the dealership than to depend on a statement in a forum post.
