Default power steering

So I replaced the power steering rack on my '03 Caravan and recently started hearing a wining sound in the pump. It only happens in the morning when cold. Sound disappears when van warms up. It's the sound that's made when there is air in the system but it was fine up until now. Fluid looks good with no foaming, and level is correct. any thoughts on this. Thanks

Many have success replacing the fluid reservoir to cure PS noises, theory being the filter screen in it restricts fluid flow. Could be as your fluid warms and thins it slowly increases the flow rate through the somewhat clogged screen. Around $25 - $50 at your dealership.

I replaced the resevoir the first time mine caused the pump to cavitate. The next time I cleaned the screen with carburator cleaner and blow dried the reservoir before I put it back on. Still working fine. Cheaper than than a new reservoir. Just be careful and not punch a hole in the screen.

Default Same problem

I have the same whining problem. Is the reservoir in the top of the engine bay where you fill with fluid or is it in the power steering pump? I want to clean the screen and flush the system to see if that fixes the problem.

I have not dug into this yet but how do you get the screen out? Is it small enough to come out the top of the lid?

The screen does not come out, it is part of the reservoir.

finally got around to doing this. Took the reservoir out and 'backflushed' it with carb cleaner and brake cleaner. a little bit of black muck came out. put it back together and no more noise. Thanks guys for the info!
