Need a new remote?
I recently purchased a 2012 Grand Caravan that was a rental. After taking delivery I was told that there was only 1 remote available and that the rental company (Enterprise) had the other one.
Not the case....so I went to the local dealer to see about getting another remote and had sticker shock! $245 for the remote and $65 to then program it and cut the key.
I decided to bite the bullet since I needed a second remote. After 15 min. the service guy told me that a body shop had just bought the last one for my van....GO FIGURE!
I then asked him out of curiosity if I brought him a remote that was purchased from the web could he program it and cut the key and he said yes for the $65 bucks.....then I got to thinking how much would a new unused remote be off of the web vs. the $245 from the dealer?
Only one way to find out....eBay is a great place and I found a BRAND NEW OEM remote specifically for my van (power doors) with an uncut key for $58.49 with free shipping. Website is YOURKEYLESSREMOTE.COM outside of eBay. MAKE SURE YOU BUY THE EXACT ONE FOR YOUR VEHICLE! Look a the pic and make sure it matches yours with the button functions.
Since I only had 1 remote and really wanted 3 I bought 2 of these from eBay for a combined total of $116.98. Shipping was through USPS and arrived within 3 days.
I then went to the dealer and paid the $65.00 bucks to have ONE of the new remotes programmed and both keys cut for the TWO new remotes.
I now have 2 new remotes (one I programmed myself) for $182 vs. paying the dealership well over $300 for just one....
The kicker is that you have to already have TWO working remotes in order to program anymore yourself. I did not have that to start with but I figured that by saving the $$$ on the extra remotes, having the dealer program one and being able to program the 3rd one myself was worth it!
Actually kudos to the local dealer who offered to program the remote that I brought them vs. telling me that I had to buy it from them.
If you already have two remotes and decide to buy a 3rd one from the web (make sure it is NEW OEM, I guess you could go used but why?) here are the programming instructions...pretty easy!)
YOU MUST HAVE TWO WORKING FOBIX REMOTES TO USE THIS PROCEDURE
1. Insert first programmed key into ignition switch.
2. Switch ignition ON for at least 3 seconds but no longer than 15 seconds.
3. Turn ignition OFF and remove key.
4. Within 15 seconds insert second programmed key into ignition switch and turn ignition ON.
5. After 10 seconds an audible tone will be heard and immobilizer warning lamp will flash.
6. Turn ignition OFF and remove second programmed key.
7. Within 60 seconds insert non-programmed key into ignition switch and turn ignition ON.
8. After 10 seconds an audible tone will be heard and immobilizer warning lamp will illuminate for 3 seconds.
9. Switch ignition OFF.
10. Remove key.
11. Check operation of programmed key transmitter.
12. Repeat procedure for additional key transmitters if required (up to 8 key transmitters can be programmed).
Hope this helps anyone out there who needs another remote....it's not like the good old days of just cutting a spare key! But with a little common sense and web searching you can save a bundle of money on a new remote!
Also my van is to be used for FREE transportation for disabled Veterans in the Southern Maryand tri-county area and although I am funding this as such out my personal money I am asking for donations to help me.
Please PM me for information regarding my efffort!
Regards,
Dave
