2009 Caravan Broken Gear Shifter
I've owned my '09 Grand Caravan since brand new.
Love the van, even though it can drive you crazy at times with stupid things, like a broken gear shift!
In April 2012, my Auto-Stick feature stopped working. I could not manually upshift or downshift when the gearshift was pushed left or right. Not too big a deal, got it fixed when I had time. The entire shifter had to be replaced.
Almost exactly one year later to the day (April 2013)I put the van in Drive, and ended up in Neutral.
I couldn't get it into Drive.
Then I put it in Park, but the tranny was in Reverse.
Then I couldn't get it out of Park, and had to push the little emergency white button to release the gearshift.
I noticed A LOT of slack between Drive and Park, and in the end, I could only get Neutral and Drive to function.
Even though the shifter would go into Park, the tranny remained in Reverse, and I could not remove the FOB from the ignition.
To park the van for the night, I had to use the parking brake (I always do anyways), had to leave the FOB in the ignition, had to remove the key from the FOB, , and had to disconnect the battery overnight because the ignition would not shut off.
To get it started the next day, had to re-connect the battery, had to use the emergency white button to release the shifter from Park, moved the shifter around until I got it in Neutral, and started the van.
Took it to the Dealer and I'm glad it was still under warranty.
They found the gearshift broken inside and binding.
The entire assembly was replaced.
I'm back on the road and I hope this doesn't happen again.
Also, both Mechanics advised me to GENTLY operate the shifter and not slam it down to Drive, and not to slam it up into Park.
