[4th Gen : 01-07]: Possible Problems With Monroe Quick struts on my 2001 GC
I just installed some Monroe Quick Struts 171572L/R June 21. At first all the clunking and clicking went away. Now it's back at slow speeds over bumps. I also replaced the Swaylinks and bushings. So now thinking that the strut nuts maybe loose? I looked on the web and it seems that some people have had this problem. Before I installed them I called Monroe and asked if I should ck the torque on them (60ft lb). 21mm on nut and 10mm on strut shaft. The tech told me that I should not have to do this. So I did not. Wish I had. Now have to remove wiper assy tray, not really a big deal, but would have been easier to check outside.
Has anyone had this problem also with the quick struts? They've only been in about 1 1/2 months.
The Monroe tech also told me that there might also be some issues with "coil clash". So will also look for that. Not exactly what that might be?? But need to see if the springs are touching.
Thanks

I've heard of the upper mounts failing very prematurely on some quick strut replacements (and just cheap upper mounts failing very early in general).
Sometimes you can check them by removing the dust cover and prying the nut on the top from side to side. You should be able to access this area without removing the wiper tray I would think?

Thx for replying. On my GC the wipper tray has to come out, it completely covers the tops of the towers where the nuts are. If their to loose I will have to get a 21mm pass through socket. I don't know if the KYB brand would have been an better quality?
Okay found L side strut nut loose 10ftlb should be 60. Could not find a 21mm pass thru socket so purchased a 13/16 sparkplug 1/2 socket. Cut off 3/8 inch on the nut side. Then tried to drill out the 1/2 to 5/8 but drill bit would not cut all the way down, so used a course rat tail file, abut 1/2 in dia. Then ground down my 10mm deep socket so it would fit inside the filled out hole. Now using the sparkplug socket with a 7/8 box wrench with the 10mm ground down socket to hold the strut, I was able to tighten the nut. Then I removed the sparkplug socket and put on the 21mm deep socket with torque wrench set to 60lb and torqued the nut. Not more rattle. Hope this helps someone else.

Yeah I forgot about the cup around the upper strut mount - it'd be very tricky to get in there with the wiper tray on, my mistake.
Curious that the upper nut was that loose. Personally I always always always check them before installation, but that is only because I've had them come loose before. It would be interesting to know whether the nut was loose from the factory or if the upper mount is collapsing/failing and allowing some extra play up there. Do keep an eye on the nut/mount and let us know if the problem returns.
Do you find the ride much different with the Monroe quick struts? I have heard many times that they can ride very different because of different spring parameters, and that they also don't use the differently coiled springs left vs right.

I'm not 100% sure, but feel that the Monroe Quick struts 171572 I installed 6 months ago are creating noise again. After I tightened the Strut Shaft nut on top of the tower everything seemed okay. But 3 months later having noises again. When I first installed them all the clicking, rattling, clunking sounds went away. I forgot to mention that the Link arms and stabilizer bushing were also replaced.
So checked link arms tight, but found that the Stabilizer Bar bushings were wearing out all ready. Their Moog K7406 blue in color. So I decided to get the Mopar OEM 4743024-AE. Their different, have a plastic sleeve in them. Has anyone installed this style? Will the plastic sleeve fit over the bar without breaking in half? They also have a lot of grease on them. They have a slit in them as well as the rubber. I also found that Moog makes the same style too. According the picture I found with the Moog ones it shows the slit up against the frame. Is that correct also for the Mopar OEM?
I also banged around the chassis parts with a rubber mallet to see if I could recreate the noise. The only thing I found was the brake caliper slide bolts might have a little to much play in the slide housing that is mounted to the knuckle. Not sure if that's okay? Have to look into this? Does anyone know how tight they should be? It's the bolt/slide on the caliper piston side.
I also checked the fitting under the lower ball joints and they seem tight not moving around. I believe from what I've read that means they're still okay?
The inner tie rods seem to be okay at this time? They were replaced about one yr ago.
So after all this, I called Amazon where I purchased them, their going to replace the struts. So after I install them, I'll let you know how it works out?
But please if anyone has any feedback on the stabilizer bushings or the brake caliper bolts/slides please let me know. Or if you have had the same problem like me with the Monroe Quick Struts.
Thanks again

Okay I might have finally located the source of the rattling. Today I installed the new style Mopar stabilizer bar bushings, that have the inserts. After installing took for test ride. Still had rattling at slow speeds. Did some testing and found that when I applied the brakes slightly the rattling went away. So I will have to contact Firestone who did the brake job 6k ago. They installed some Adaptive One Hybird Ceramic Pads from Napa Auto. Not sure if the job was done right to begin with, because after I picked up the car one of the calipers was sticking and started smoking. So did they install new clips that normally come with pads for this car? Did they grease areas properly? Now this Firestone is closed.
