My 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan 4.0L SXT with 53,000 miles has a loud ticking noise coming from the engine. It sounds like it could be a lifter (metal ticking).

The ticking started about 15,000 miles ago. It's in synch with the engine RPM (speeds up when the engine speeds up). It doesn't matter if it's in Park or being driven, and the temperature has no effect on it.

Oil and filter have been changed every 3,000 to 4,000 miles.

Has anybody else had this problem? Any ideas on what it could be?

I'm thinking of taking my 2010 GC into the dealer under the 5yr/100k warranty. My neighbors say that they can hear me coming up the street.

When I called the service department at the dealership to ask about the ticking, the guy acted like he'd never heard of anything like this before. He asked me if I had any oil in it, and said that his records show that I'd never had my oil changed there.

I do all of my own maintenance (oil and filter changes every 3,000 to 4,000 miles), I keep a log of all maintenance I perform, and I save all of my receipts for parts and supplies, so I think I should be okay regarding the warranty.

I'll be sure to post back if I take it in.

 

Service Dept. plan A: it's normal, they all do that. (they don't)
Service Dept. plan B: that's a new one. (it isn't)

Good luck, it's hopefully something simple and you don't get to the next ...

Service Dept. plan C: incorrect maintenance, you are to blame (along with all the other suckers with the same problem)
Service Dept. plan D: wear and tear item, not covered under warranty. (brake calipers are 30K mile wear and tear items?)

 

Just a sanity check:
Your Engine Oil is SAE 5W-30, right?

 

NO NO he should be using 10w30 oil for a 4.0l

Using the recommended oil made a difference for me. Engine seems to be a bit quieter in that regard.

 

You'll be ok with or without receipt. If you ran the engine low on oil or slack off on the oil change, it will show when you pull off the valve cover. Chrysler normally just ask for Pictures of inside the engine instead of oil change record. But definitely a smart move to keep track of the record, tho.

 

I took my 2010 GC with the 4.0L (ticking) engine into the dealer. The engine tech confirmed that the ticking sound was caused by defective rocker arms, so they replaced both rocker arm assemblies (04892293AC), the intake gasket, and the valve cover gaskets.

The van is less than 5 years old and has under 100,000 miles, so all parts and labor were covered (for free) under the Chrysler Power Train Warranty that came standard with the van. (The ticking began at around 37,000 miles.)

Hopefully, this isn't a widespread problem with these engines, and the new rocker arm assemblies will last the life of the van.

 

Don't count on it. I had mine done twice on my 2010 GC 4l and it is starting to do it again. Just under 100,000 km/60,000 miles. Usually starts starts when the cold weather hits and progressively gets worse. I am going to bring it in again. It would be nice if they figured out the cause and not just fix the effect. I do enjoy this van I would hate to think that this is something that needs to be done every few years. Really unacceptable.
