My gauge always runs a little below and a little above half. I was monitoring the actual temperature and it bounces between 202 + or - up to 220 or so before it starts dropping back to normal. Is that normal? The high readings are when I am standing still (outside temperature was in the 60's).

Yes it is normal. That's because the fans kick on at 220 to 228 degrees and then come down to 192 and the fans will kick off.
