Hello all
My caravan temp gauge has started fixating all over the place. While driving it will go from the mid point on the gauge to hot with the water temp light coming on and dinging then back to the midpoint all in a mater of lest than 4 minutes. The engine seems cool and it is only 20 degrees here. It will happen anytime, it happens on up hill and down hill and on level ground. There is no real pattern. Any help will be great!

You didn't mention anything about them, so I'll ask the really obvious questions. Did you check the coolant level in both the radiator and overflow tank? (and if so, what are the levels) Any drips coming from the bottom, or spots on the ground?

Ok, that takes care of the immediate problem. But you will need to monitor the level frequently going forward (every day or two, at least until you know there is no big and fast loss). Check the ground every day for spots, and look underneath for drips. Leaks become more likely and more common as vehicles get older, so it's really important to get them taken care of before they cause major mechanical problems.
Sorry for not responding earlier but work has been crazy with th snow. Van ran fine until yesterday then sam problem. Haven't een any leaks but it is wet inside with all the melting snow. I will put down some cardboard to check for leaks. My wife also tells me that the heater will not blow warm air but would that be related to this problem?

The fact that the gauge is moving up again after so few days means that your van has a significant coolant leak. You should get this fixed ASAP, because engine damage caused by a major overheat could end up costing you $1000 or more. Assuming you don't DIY, it's much better to pay a shop probably $300 or less now, and avoid getting hit with the much more expensive and problematic repair.

I am sorry to learn of your leak issue. Your ability to determine that a leak is present will certainly help the diagnosis process. As, @cv2003 has stated, a trip to your servicing facility will likely be able to efficiently locate the source of the leak and let you know what is necessary to resolve it.
