Unhappy 97 caravan trans noise please help

This is actually a 1997 voyager se 3.3L, 4 spd trans. The cooler on the radiator broke, and contaminated the tranny. When this happened, I had the car towed, and I replaced the radiator, and flushed the trans twice, both times with new filters, til it was clean. The car then drove great for a few months. Now, it makes a whirring noise when driving that you can hear at about 2000 rpm...then it shifts, and does it in the next gear. When you listen to the top of the tranny with the car in park, using a stethoscope, you can hear a similar whirring noise if you raise the rpms by moving the throttle. The fluid looks and smells clean, and the level is full. Took out 24oz of fluid and tried stop-slip. Seems the same. Could it be the torque converter? Haven't checked for metal in the pan yet. This is all recent. I'm hoping there is something I can do without having to replace the transmission. The engine runs great. Any ideas? Maybe I am over-thinking. Please help. This is our family car, I love it...they might have to pry me off it when it goes! Thanks
