[2nd Gen : 91-95]: Problem with A670 transmission
Lurking and saw lots of great advice here. Now I have the problem.
Have problem with 1994 Dodge Caravan 3.0 3 speed auto transmission. I have no tach. What could be causing problem?
Hard 2-3 shift at about 27 mph moderate throttle. Harder at low throttle, softer at more throttle opening. Rpm not known. Was not always this hard after latest rebuild. Want to know if this means about to fail again.
Different speed upshift in D compared to D2. Not changed since latest rebuild 2011.
In D, 1-2 shift at 20 mph. Does shift higher mph if throttle open more. 1-2 20mph probably too high speed for light moderate throttle upshift.
And hard 2-3 shift at 27-30 mph at moderate throttle.
In D2 1-2 shift at 15 mph.
Lockup TC at 42-50 mph. And unlocks normally. I think is normal.
Reverse ok. Low range ok. First gear in D or D2 ok.
No slipping in any gear or lockup TC.
----------
What could be the cause? Anything I can do. Adjusted band and throttle linkage with no change in problem. Do not understand how to adjust throttle linkage. Maybe need advice in that too.
History. Rebuilt 3 times. #1 at 93K miles in 2003 included rebuilt TC and at least one planetary gearset. Erratic shift, not always upshifting 1-2 or 2-3 or downshifting, sometimes start in 3rd gear. ATF level OK. Tech showed me edges of gears on plantary worn. I think the TC broke after rebuild because it had a metal clanking sound like a desktop fan where blade hits the case and very foul ATF odor. Took it back. Did not ask what they did. No Lockup TC after repair. Lockup TC did not work until TC changed. Totally normal shifting after TC changed and whatever caused clanking repaired.
Rebuild #2 135K in Apr 2010. Big hard part failure. Transmission locked up. Could not roll it in Neutral. Tech showed me lots of metal shavings on AT filter at valve body. Not sure what was replaced.
Probably sloppy job. Many pan bolts found by me later to be stripped. Had flaring 2-3 shift one yr after rebuild not changed by band adjustment. Lockup TC ok.
Rebuild #3 at about 139K in Aug 2011. Was 400 miles out of town. Could not take it back to rebuild #2 shop. Problem was delayed upshift or no upshift. Sometimes 3rd gear start. Very foul ATF odor. Probably not just governor problem because foul ATF odor. #3 was and ATRA shop. Others not. Rebuild took more than 2 wks. Shop tried some additional part. Did not solve problem. I presume additional part removed. Do not know what that part was. Maybe valve body or governor part.
Since rebuild #3, has had 20mph 1-2 upshift in D and but Ok 2-3 shift at 27-30.
And 1-2 upshift at 15 mph.
Found lots of metal in ATF when I changed ATF 600 miles later. Had mangefine filter. Found a piece of foam rubber almost filling AT pan. Probably to screen out particles. I removed it because it appeared to restrict flow and cause slow TC lockup.
143k, Cooler line flush and at filter replacement and replaced magnefine filter. Still lots of particles in old ATF.
Sep 2014, 147k. Replaced radiator for water leak and bypassed rad AT cooler and installed Tru cool 4454 cooler. Hope 4454 is big enough. Changed AT and filter again. Not so many particles in drained ATF.
As an aside, since rebuild #3 have used Walmart Dexron or Walmart ATF4+ but found little or no difference in TC lockup. Thought different friction modifier would make a difference I could feel but so far not.
Thanks again.

I would take it somewhere that knows the 670 trans well. Cheap is generally not good with these trans.
I also had 3 rebuilds on mine. #1 was second gear clutches gone 167k (no 2nd, no reverse). #2 was TC Solenoid bad 169k (fried the TC and 1st gear clutches). #3 Was Finally right, Upgraded clutches, Modded Valve Body, Mild Stall. Cost me $1200 the last time around.
Dirty Governor caused #1. Had very laggy shifts, never shifted the same twice. My fluid was rank before every rebuild. If the governor is clogged up it will cause up/downshift issues and cause the trans to either slam into gear or slip excessively. This will cause the fluid to become very foul.
Like I said find a shop that knows the 670, most likely will be an older shop (my experience around here), not dealers it's too old for them.

Welcome to DF
Why did it take so long. LOL... The biggest problem is using dexron ATF fluid. Did you have coolant leaking into the transmission? These transmission has two problems. One is the governor and the other is the valve body vent tube. Which is also used for your kick down throttle pressure. One of reason the dealer won't look at the problem, is because the old timers have retired and the younger guys didn't want to learn.

Thanks for your helpful comments. Have been at other forums to fix my other cars. AT 29 yrs old and 12 yrs old, those others have needed lots of repairs and maintenance. Had to learn how to DIY on those and quickly.
Don't think coolant got into the trans. Radiator leaked near the AT cooler upper hose. AT was not bubbly or milkshake like. Did a cooler line flush and installed external AT cooler, bypassed radiator AT cooler. Dexron III and ATF 4+ appeared to shift the same including the lockup TC. No doubt ATF4+ has better specs. Used mostly ATF4+ in the past. Cooler line flush was DexIII. ATF4+ seems more important in A604.
Also was not able to find specific pictures how to remove and take apart the governor and maybe install the sonnax kit. Is it obvious once the valve body is off?
What is the valve body vent tube? What does it look like. How to fix it?
Have checked the ATSG service manual and did not find it.
Did find that the sump is vented through the hollow dipstick when searching for "vent".
Have the paper FSM for 1994 and did not find valve body vent.
Thanks for your help.
