It's hard to tell for sure but if the 5W-30 had been run for the same 5k miles as the 0W-20, wear would likely be the same. Likewise if the 0W-20 was ran for 3k miles, the wear would there again be the same as the 5W-30.


If you start at 0ppm Iron and have 7ppm by 3k miles, how much Iron do you have at 5k miles? Basic math.

 

Exactly basic math. It should be under 12ppm by 5k, not the 19ppm you were showing.

 

The sample interval is 2,600 and 5,200. I come up with more like 14ppm.


After some variation in lab work and sampling technique, that 5 parts per million becomes nil.

 

5ppm may be the difference between a motor lasting and a motor dying early, all I'm saying, may seem null to you, not to a person who demands the most from their motors.

Polaris Labs didn't flag any wear as abnormal or throw any cautions. Really, I wish I had sampled the 0W-20 at the same 6-month mark as the 5W-30. I believe the wear numbers would be toe-in-toe in a like per like comparison like that. Maybe next time? Currently, I'm testing out Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30. Maybe I'll test the 0W-20 version after that.
