[3rd Gen : 96-00]: p0700, p0731, p0500 issues
Hi,
i like hot coffee, long walk in the ..... oh wait wrong site.
here is the meat and potatoes- 2000 dodge grand caravan, 2wd, 3.8l with 147K miles.
I am asking for help, my 2000 grand caravan is having tranny issues, started with the speed sensors going out- p0700, p0731, p0732 swapping them out fixed it the first few times. light reset after the swap- drove like a champ.
but recently, it popped up with p0700, p0720,p0730, p0731, p0732.
i flushed the tranny, replaced the filter, swapped out the input, output speed sensors. Worked for a week, than it went limp.
I changed out the changed the transmission control solenoid. now its only reading p0700, p0731 and p0500.
What do i do? My mother remarked that the van is like children's book- "if you give a mouse a cookie" give its, and it asks for more. Am tempted to ram a stake through it block and set the bastard on fire and dance around it in the buff with my pitch fork.

the 0700 is just a memory code letting you know that the PCM and TCM have spoken and there is a problem. Seems this has come up each time. The p0500 is the code for a shifting problem. The p0731 seems to be with your 1st/high or overdrive gear. I will be getting into this trans soon enough but I would actually check your wires, going up the trans tunnel, or I guess it would be transaxle.. would check for burnt, frayed, or melted wires. Wires that are in a loom and bad. And also remember because you bought a good electrical part (new) doesn't mean it is good.. I have had many experiences with parts that were electrical being bad and getting multiple from a certain "run" that were bad. Cost me a relationship once or twice. I kid you not.
Also check your fluid to make sure there is enough fluid (transmission).
P0700:
For a P0700 the only real solution is to acquire a scan tool that will communicate with the transmission control module. Extracting this code from the TCM will be the first step in repairing the fault in the transmission. If the TCM compatible scan tool will not communicate with the Transmission Control Module then that is a good indication that there may be a fault with the TCM itself.

P0500:
The simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back. Next, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the speed sensor. The location of the sensor depends on your vehicle. The sensor could be on the rear axle, transmission, or perhaps the wheel hub (brake) assembly. If the wiring and connectors are OK, then check the voltage at the speed sensor. Again, the exact procedure wil depend on your make and model of vehicle. If everything looks OK, replace the sensor.

Again not sure how Mopar does their stuff... but if they take any readings off your ABS then maybe you actually have an ABS sensor going bad and it is screwing up your transmission. I have heard of times where an exciter ring has cracked and the HAL effect was thrown off by a space or 2 that cracked and were a little out of sync with what factory programs.. fix was changing out the ABS exciter rings on the input shaft of the transaxle for the steering knuckles. Crazy stuff man.
also have you had the transmission serviced anytime recently? As in full fluid purge and new filter? The other codes it was throwing said dirty fluid, internal trans failure, or solenoid failure. Valve body issues, dirty trans fluid, or transmission computer. Something is not right, call the local trans shop and see what they say normally happens when the codes you posted show up.
