Default Bank one Rich P0172

I have a 2004 grand Caravan with 3.3Liter 2WD drive. It has one tail pipe. As far as I see the exhaust pipe from both sides of the engine combine before going into the Catalytic Converter. 02 Sensors I can find on the engine OR in the Service manual are ONE upstream and ONE downstream. I have a P0172 code (Rich Fuel Mixture Bank One). Is there a Bank TWO sensor??? Why doesn't it show up in the service manual????
Why does P0172 indicate Bank ONE?????

I looked at my 2006 manual. It says the same thing. I am guessing the code displayed has 2 digits so as to allow a bank digit for engines that have four 02 sensors. Since it has only one upstream and one downstream, they are displayed as bank one. I share your frustration. It would be nice if the Mopar experts would clarify.

Thanks for the reply. I was beginning to think I was the only one in the world that noticed this....

P)172 indicates the upstream sensor has detected a rich condition. Could be the sensor but could be just as likely the sensor has done it's job and told you the engine is running rich. Read through this before opening your wallet: http://www.obd-codes.com/p0172 Head to YouTube for videos on the subject.

Talking Banks 1 and 2 Sensors

Just an FYI to make it easier to remember where Bank 1 always is. It is always on the same side of the engine as #1 cylinder. Bank 2 is on the opposite side. Also, where there is only one upstream and one downstream sensor, they call it Bank 1. Guess it's less trouble for the computer to digest it.

Default thanks

I do understand all of that. A more accurate meaning for DTS code P0172 would be "Bank One and Two running rich fuel mixture". To say that only bank One is running rich is incomplete, therefore inaccurate, since the upstream sensor is smelling the exhaust gas of both banks.
