Great news, smokesxt. Used the channel-locks, and it went back into place on the grommet very easily. I finger-applied more grease, then went to the shifter and moved it all the way forward and all the way back 5 times. Each revolution got easier. A check back under the hood revealed everything still in place.

Thanks so much for resolving this for me! It may stay in place another 6 years, or maybe not, but at least I know the problem area if/when it arises again, and what to do about it.
