Default Drive shaft pulled out during strut replacement

2006 Grand Caravan 3.3
I've been trying for two days to figure out how to get this wheel reattached to its drive shaft. I guess I just let the wheel assembly Fall away from the transmission too far during the strut replacement on the passenger side. I don't think taking the boot off will make things any easier so that's why I haven't removed it yet. I'm not even sure if I can remove it without replacing the whole shaft. Is there any way to get this put back the way it was without removing the entire assembly?

You'll just have to work it back together by the feel. About the only thing that will help is to remove the axle from the spindle.

Default Thanks for the help

Do you mean that I should pull the shaft out of the transmission or pull it out if the wheel assembly? Aren't those boots sealed? I'll take them off but I seem to remember that they are full of grease. Or am I thinking of something else?
I pulled the caliper off to make it lighter. Does turning the brake disc help? Is that how I'm going to get it seated?
I had to work the strut assembly out of the van with the strut head broken and the spring completely at full extension. I guess all that knocked it out.

No need to remove the boot. You can try using the rotor as leverage but you also need to make sure the bearings are clear of the housing or you’ll just be fighting it.

Spindle = wheel bearing and hub assembly. The large nut in the center of the rotor is threaded onto the CV axle shaft - remove it and you can pull the CV axle out of the spindle so it’s easier to handle and slip back together.

That said, you could also try removing it from the transmission but you will lose fluid doing so - unnecessary in my opinion. The axle is retained to the transmission with a spring retaining ring (circlip as some call them). Position a pry bar between the axle and transmission then give it quick, hard push to pop it loose.
