Default Transmission thinks it's a manual

We have a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan with the 3.8 and 164,000 miles.
The van was fine with no indication of problems or leaks. When my wife came to a stop the van shut off. She put it in park, then drive and the van shuddered on take off and acted like it was going to stall but took off. It shifted through all the gears fine until the stop sign right before our driveway. There it stalled once she was at a complete stop. It started back up fine but as soon as she put it in drive it shuddered and stalled again.
A mechanic friend came out with a code reader and drove it the half mile to the house. When he put it in drive he quickly stopped on the gas and it didn't stall but took off like a manual transmission. Once first gear fully engaged (like in a manual when the clutch was fully disengaged and you're moving) it was fine. He said the van thought it was a manual.
When I got home I cranked it up with no problems, put it in reverse, neutral and park several times and everything worked as it is supposed to. When I put it in drive it would shudder and shut off. I could put it in reverse and back up our quarter mile drive with no problems. Putting it in drive sometimes it would shudder and lug then almost leap forward before catching and would then drive fine. Other times putting it in drive and letting off the brake it would immediately die. If when I was coming to a stop and shifted into neutral it would drop to idle and run smooth. When shifting from neutral to drive if I quickly stopped the gas it would shudder and act like I was slow coming off the clutch then catch and go on. If I wasn't quick enough it would choke out and stall.
There are no lights on the dash, no weird noises, odors or smoke like you would get if the tranny was burning up. The only noise you get is when the window is down you can hear a slight straining sound and light clunk when dropping into drive that goes away as soon as it's moving. There are no abnormal sounds when in the other gears moving or idle. The manual shift option does not work either.
