[5th Gen : 08+]: Oil Change Indicator System
#3
Yes I have an owners manual and have downloaded the full manual. Haven't been able to find any info as to where this message shows. My Caravan has the basic dash.

The CHANGE OIL message should flash in the odometer cluster for approximately 12 sec after a single chime on models without the EVIC. Under no circumstance should you go above 16000 km between oil change intervals.

Thanks.
Funny the dealer says change oil every 5,000km.

The oil life indicator is duty cycle so depending on driving style, temp the oil change intervals may vary mine usually flashes on in the range of 12,000 -12,750 km but I seen it go as high as 14,250 km once with a lot of highway driving.
Dealers like to upsell their service plus some oil filter says to be good for 5.000 miles or 8,000 km which I find is another marketing ploy an oil filter doesn't quit filtering at any specific mileage especially if using a quality synthetic oil with good detergents and anti-wear additives.

The problem isn’t the oil, it’s filter construction. Most widely available filters just can’t withstand that long of time/distance without collapsing. Once collapsed, the paper will start tearing and having any remaining filter media left doesn’t matter at that point - the dirt and contamination the filter is supposed to collect will start getting into the engine through the tears.
Some aftermarket companies are beginning to produce what they’re calling “long life” filters that are supposed to withstand longer service intervals but I don’t know if there’s been any real world data (i.e. non-laboratory) to support whether or not they are meeting those goals.
That said, it doesn’t hurt to change just the filter, but what are the chances of doing so without having to change the oil shortly thereafter anyway?
