Default Spare tire cover needed or not?

I bought a 2019 Grand Caravan SXT used and was unaware it did not have a compact spare and jack kit. I, for one, am unwilling to rely on a sealant/pump option. I found a spare tire and jack kit for a reasonable price. I am currently storing the tire in the van but would like to store in under the van. I found and ordered a winch mechanism for a very reasonable price. I plan to install the winch but I don't have the plastic covers. Are they really needed? I would plan to drop the spare every six months or so to check air pressure and could lubricate all the cables at that time. My old '90 Caravan just kept the spare under the rear of the van without any protection and never had a problem with either the tire or the winch.

If you’re gonna drop it a couple times a year to check it, you’ll be fine. Just add washing and touching up the rim paint to your list to protect from corrosion.

Protecting the winch is a benefit, but I think the primary purpose of the cover is to keep dirt and debris from collecting on the wheel. If you decide to add one later, you could probably find it cheap at a salvage yard.

Well, I guess that's my plan. Used upper and lower covers still seem pretty pricey once shipping is added. With the tire, jack, winch tools and the winch I've been able to do the job for $250. I'm still amazed the GC didn't come with a spare!! Plus, no AT dipstick, but I'll do the oil dipstick hack and hold to the severe-use schedule for AT fluid and filter changes. This is our third Caravan. So far my favorite was our maroon '90 regular Caravan with one sliding door and the 3 L Mitsubishi V6. I hope our '19 GC works out as well as the '90.
