Default Transmission fluid question

Hello I recently purchased a 1997 Dodge Caravan SE/Sport with 170K miles. With the supply chain issues and the rising cost of used cars/vans I need to keep this running as long as possible! The van checked out pretty good with the mechanic, however, he is recommending a transmission flush. I have heard that it might be better to do the drain and fill approach a few times rather than the flush given the age of the van and the unknown maintenance history. I am actually not sure of the age of the transmission because it was replaced at some point and the former owner couldn't remember when but that it was probably done around 15 years ago. My questions are: any thoughts on flush vs drain & fill? And, more importantly, I am reading online about the importance of using the right type of transmission fluid to replace the current fluid. The mechanic estimate shows him using ATF Valvoline Max-Life but I am seeing info online that say ATF +4 should be used - any input on this would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I would check the filter and add ATF+4. The pan doesn't have a gasket, it uses silicone.

The mechanic says if I bring in the ATF +4 he will use it rather than the standard fluid his business uses. If I purchase it, is there anything I need to know (brand? etc) aside from ATF +4 ? Thanks!

As long it's ATF+4 there's many different brands out there that makes ATF+4 fluid that will meet the Mopar standard.
