Default 1995 Dodge Caravan gear ratios

Hey I've been trying to learn new ways of getting a quicker 0 to 60 time in my van. Today a friend of mine (Who has a supped up 1980's Caravan) that if your going to race, to put my van into 1st gear and then then shift it to second whenever you want to. Normally my van shifts into 2nd at 20 mph. I'm now shifting it at around 40 mph. What is the safest speed to shift at for 1st and 2nd. I really don't want to blow my motor up. I don't have a tach either so that doesn't help. Hopefully someone can enrich me with some knowledge!

Leave it in Drive and floor the throttle, WOT upshifts usually occur at or near engine redline anyway. Just let the trans do its job.
