[2nd Gen : 91-95]: alternator doesn't charge.
so i took the alternator off. and took the back off and the diode bridge was melted. when i first got the van they told me the battery would not charge. changed the battery and everything worked fine for a while. now it won't charge again. it has the original alternator and 150,000 miles and the water pump is leaking a little around the seal and a few of the oil pan bolts were loose as well. typical high milage engine problems. so the only thing i can see that powers the alternator is fuse 3 and the auto shutdown relay that feeds the ecm by the battery that tells the alternator to turn off or on. is that correct or am i missing something? i was told there is a device that makes the regulator a part of the alternator instead of the ecm. are they any good?
well i fixed it for free. when i test i need to make sure the leads are plugged in all the way. now it charges at 13.75 volts i didn't have anything on but the radio and the engine. i still need an alternator but not right this second. this is not my daily driver. my water pump still drips out the weep hole and the tensioner still has a crack in it, but one at a time as i get money. tags first. if i don't renew the tags my apartment complex will tow it.
