Default 96 caravan tranny problem

Hey I'm Harold just found this forumn, so this is my frist post.

I own a 91 caravan ,a 92 I just bought for parts and a 96 I just bought for a family van.

A freind of mine and I just went on a 300 mile trip in the 96 to try it out ,it is a 3.0 with (non overdrive tranny) .Well the trip went just fine until we cam off the interstate on the return trip.I stopped at the stop sign and started to pull out and I heard this awful growlling noise like two gears rubbing together but not meshing enough to engage, would not go at all .I put the thing in low gear and it did move under its own power but I could stil hear that noise.

Well as I said I just bought it last week so I took it to the car lot I bought it from(cash money no payments)and they basicly told me to get lost and that I bought it as is and no warrentys?

so I looked at the fluid in it and it was full but was BROWN and smelt burnt.

A friend of mine had this real nice 92 with a rebuilt tranny and blown motor. so i bought it from him for parts as alot of them will work on my 91 .What I need to know is Will the tranny work in the 96 ? The 92 is also a 3.0 with (non overdrive)

And if it does work should I change out all the sensors on the tranny with the ones out of the 96?

Really could use some help on this if anyone knows.

thanks Harold

I'm about 99.9% postitive the transmission from the 92 will go into the 96 with no problems. I can verify this tomorrow, ask a mechanic I know. As for the sensors, the Input and Output Speed Sensors are interchangable and don't need to be switched. Were their other sensors you were referring to?

Check the 92 Tranny and make sure the fluids good... I'm sure it's fine since it's coming from someone you trust.

Hope this helps!

well that conferms what my freind said he also thought it would work. they both look the same . thanks so much for the repile. One guy wanted $1500.00 for the tranny and that didn"t sound right.I could understand that if it was a overdrive tranny. and thanks also on the sensor info (I was just talking about the ones you mentioned)

The van is suppose to run but has a lower end knock so I'm going to fire it up and make sure it goes in all gears and then if it does I'm going to pull the pan and check for filings and also for clean red fluid.

thanks agin Amanda

Noe that I've checked with the mechanic, he thinks it'll be tough.

The extension housing, off the 92 transmission is different than the 96 set up... so you'll need to mod it. And from what I've been told, it's not a piece of cake.

So, I'm not sure what to tell you... even the mechanic I asked had to do some comparisions on the transmissions... but it looks like it won't be a clean swap...

Keep us informed!

OK Amanda I was having a pretty good Monday until I read your post. I fired up the 92 (donner van ) and drove it,shifted good so I jacked it up and pulled the tranny cover off and the pan was good and clean, no shavings. What really made my day was it didn"t have a rod knocking in it . the reason it didn"t have any oil preasure was because the oil sender wirers where broken off and right there on the gauges was a check gauges lite?(: Well I was comided to tear in to this thing although my freinds son didn't have his car out of the garage yet so I did it out side in the cold. I just got it out and it started freshing rain. So I was a happy camper(:

Then I come home and read this email about this Extension housing? Are you reffering to the housing the right axle comes out of or what? What did he mean by modifiy it? I guess I'll find out tomorrow when I get the other one out.

Even though it was bad news it was good to hear you reply and help me out on this.

Thanks alot and I'll give a up date tomorrow nite.

Well I have the tranny out of the 96 and there is no way I can see for this to work first of all the 96 has a rear mount behind the motor ,(toward rear of van) and the 92 does not. Second of all and most critical is the 96 has a crank magnetic pick up on it and it looks like you would have to precisely drill the hole for it, and then be sure it was at the right height.Doesn't sound like a shade tree mechanic job to be LOL LOL.

So I bit the bullet and bought a good used one at a pricey $450.00

They are suppose to deliver it tomorrow after noon.Chrysler wanted $1800.00

Thanks once again Harold

I'm so sorry I didn't get back to you until now... I'm so happy it's all back together and at least you saved a ton on what it costs from Chrysler. At least it's all done and better... I'm sorry my advice led you on and then let you down... even the mechanic I askedwas like 'yea... wait... no... it won't work...' I was like ICK! I'm glad it's all set now though!!
