Hello,

I'm seeking some assistance regarding a clicking noise coming from the rear differential I believe. The vehicle (2013 Dodge Challenger Sxt) has been idle due to the P60 recall (Alternator). The vehicle is basically started every two weeks to allow battery charging. This vehicle only has 843 miles.

This is the email sent to Dodge this 16th Day of February 2015:

Dear Sirs:

I contacted Dodge this day regarding a clicking noise when shifting the 2013 Dodge Challenger in Drive or Reverse; while the vehicle is stationary. The vehicle has been garaged for the winter and with due diligence for the P60 recall. The aforesaid vehicle only has 843 miles. I would like to document this defect and would like the issue corrected.

I noticed this issue upon starting the vehicle to allow the battery to charge, seeing that the vehicle has been idle.

If you wish any further information, please contact me at your earliest convenience. Thank you very much for your time and consideration in this matter.

* Included is a audio clip of the noise. All information is appreciated. One dealer stated it needs to be run, and another dealer stated it could be a voltage issue.

* Apparently, the extremely cold weather could have been a factor in the 'clicking' noise associated with gear selection. Now that the weather has warmed somewhat, the 'clicking' has disappeared.

Any thoughts about this by anyone?

I attached the audio with a photo. The 'clicking' was when I was parked and moving the gear selector (Shifter) forward and back; being stationary. The vehicle was in the garage, as the weather was extremely cold.

I have a clunking noise on my 2013 Dodge Challenger when coasting at about 20mph and then slightly tapping on the accelerator. From what I heard it is a design problem that cant be fixed. My ex dealer misdiagnosed the problem as broken teeth in the rear differential and replaced it. After the repair the same problem exists. My clunking noise happens no matter what the temperature.

The problem I was experiencing at the outset has dissipated, never occurring again. It would stand to reason that a driveshaft or differential gears could be part of the problem. We worked on some differentials, transmissions, and driveshafts years ago. If it were back then, I would guess spider gears, although I do not know much of the newer vehicles. Again, the torque converter has been known to clunk when moving the gear selector (Oldsmobile) > 'Normal'. I never had anything checked while under warranty for the problem never happened again as stated above.

How a service department could misdiagnose "broken teeth" is beyond me. I would have immediately asked to see the gear and which gear. My service department (Tasca) would never allow anything like that to happen without notifying me. It does not make sense. The issue you make mention of could possibly be related to the transmission as well; valve body. This is somewhat unlikely as the 5 speed is a fairly good transmission, only experiencing an 'O' ring issue; nothing other than that I'm aware of. Please keep me informed as I am most interested.
* I've never heard of a design problem relating to the aforesaid.
