Challenger Survey

There is a huge difference between the automatics back then and the computer controlled breakdown equipment known as automatics today. I have never heard or seen as many junk transmissions as the automatics today and unfortunately Chrysler/Dodge seems to have the worst of them. I also don't see the need or reason for using computers to control automatic transmissions. My Roadrunners original A727-B automatic transmission still worked great to the day I had it rebuilt for street/strip. The automatics back then were bulit proof and could take almost anything thrown at them. The newer ones starting in the early 90's and up have been nothing more than boat anchors which is why every car I have bought since my Roadrunner has been ones with manual transmissions ('88 Daytona Shelby Z 5-spd. manual, '87 Daytona Shelby Z 5-spd. manual, '99 Neon R/T 5-spd. manual & '04 SRT-4 5-spd. manual). This is why the Challenger has to a manual and not an automatic, at least with the V8's and especially the higher power V8's. They can make a V6 version automatic only, but to make the V8 versions automatic only would be stupid and not worth the cost since it would most likely spend more time in the shop than on the road. At the very least they need to offer any and all V8 versions with a manual transmission option, preferably a 6 speed manual.

As a kid in the 70's I wanted a Challenger after watching the movie Vanishing Point. Since that time I have owned 2 Challengers a 71 & 72 both B5 blue/black tops with 340-4bbl with the pistol grip shifters. I still want the Vanishing Point Challenger. I would like to order a white one with the 6.1 and must be a manual tranny.
Will Dodge be making any other colors for the new Challenger other than White and Hemi Orange?
I had a 1973 Hemi Orange Challenger but if I get one I would like a different color.
Has anyone heard of any other colors coming out?
If there not coming out with any other colors than I would take the White one.
Thanks for your help.
Nancy
Matt, you raised HE!! when I mentioned that an automatic option should be considered for the next Viper, and now you want an automatic option for the Challenger?

Does anybody have info on the reliability of the transmissions (auto) in the Chargers with V\8's? I haven't heard anything bad about them and I'm sure if there was a problem we would have heard about it by now.I think DCX had alot of problems in the early to mid 90's with the truck trannys but I haven't heard anything bad about the cars.
The Autostick is far and away no substitute for an actual manual transmission in any way at all. I've driven a couple cars with the Autostick and they are better than your run of the mill automatic, but they are nothing compared to a manual.
