$40,000 Challenger or....
i dont know if 40 grand would get you a very nice numbers matching hemi e-body..but it would easily buy you nice rolling chassis e-body, and with the cash left over, you could get pretty good 426 crate...figure, the "street hemi crate engine" from dodge cost about 10 grand...that leaves you around 30 grand to spend on the car itself..it would make for a pretty healthy and nice car, but not much for daily driving...
BadStratRT is correct that you cannot find a HEMI E-body. The demand is through the roof. They cost about twice that much, but if you did get a non-HEMI E-body, fixed it up if necessary, and drop in a HEMI crate engine, then you could do that. I remember the price for a 426 HEMI crate engine costing around $15,XXX more so than $10,XXX.
As for the topic, it would depend on what I was buying the car for. If it was for the purpose of being an every day driver, I'd go with the Challenger because it would be more comfortable, lower on the insurance, and just more comfortable to own. If it was to garage and just take out on the weekends, for the purpose of regaining value, then I'd go for the Viper. It would depend on how much money I wanted to spend. So probably the Challenger.

my mistake..the price for the street hemi has gone up since i worked for dodge...15 it is...but for onyl 3 grand more, you can get the 510cubic inch hemi..bang for buck...
and from looking over the prices at the barrett-jackson auto auction, the cheapest hemi challengers were going for high 50s+

And those were clones. I saw a "recreation" 70 hemi cuda hardtop go for 67000. It was a 383 4 speed car. And don't even think about a convertible. True hemi cuda/challenger convertibles are going for 2-3 mill. In mint shape that is. Hemi clones are approaching the 1 mill mark fast!
I can't see dc charging much more than what mustangs go for. These new muscle cars are to get the next generation on board. If they overprice it they will kill the market for themselves.

For this thing to fly, Dodge needs to make it compete head to head with the rest of the pony car market. It needs to beat the Mustang out dollar for dollar. The GTO shouldn't be too hard to compete with as it hasn't been that popular. The Mustang on the other had has already had it's production numbers bumped up three times that I know of. The ol' Stang is a very, very popular car. I think that as long as Dodge makes a Challenger that can whoop *** on a Stang at a reasonable price, they will sell them faster than they can make them. I sure as heck am gonna buy one as long as it stays true to the concept.
P.S.
Everybody be sure to give me a crack at making you a deal on one of these babys when they come out!

The fact that the mustang GT500 is going to go for crazy prices is going to leave a large segment of people wanting an alternative and thats where the challenger can step in and clean up. I was on board for a GT500 then everything got turned upside down, but thankfully the challenger came along to make me forget about that stang! Now if theyll just build it and price it to where I was expecting to get the GT500 I will be bringing one home, like the logo by the way quicksilver, Go Seahawks!
Right on! Go hawks!!!
Don't worry too much guys. Right now we are getting projected prices of around $28K for a 6.1 equipped car. That may change down the line, but a $40k car is not where the Challenger is heading.

28K would be tasty. Of course there's always the question of how well the concept is turned into reality. I'm anxious to see how it all shakes out. It's interesting to compare the GTO, which has a beast of an engine but no style to speak of. If the Challenger is priced to compete with the Mustang, I can't see any reason NOT to get one, unless they really screw things up.
For me they are two very different cars - tough comparison.
I would go for the Challenger (6.1 & stick). Mostly on appearance and hemi vs. V10. But that's pure taste. The Viper is still one mean machine.
