Front wheel noise
I have a loud squeel coming from my front drivers wheel.
It only does it when moving slow (20 km/h) forward and backwards.
And it only does it when driving in a straight line...turning the wheel stops it and braking stops it.
I pulled the wheel off and checked the pads thinking that it might be the saftey clip scraping on the rotor but there seems to be alot of pad left.
I moved the caliper side to side by hand thinking there might be something lodged between the pad and rotor but it's still doing it.
It's got 72,000 km on it.
I'm hoping it's not a wheel bearing. But i'm sure the wheel bearing would be making noise all the time.
Any ideas? Thanks

Actually I was going to say a wheel bearing too! It doesn't make sense that a caliper, which is typically fixed to a spindle, would change pitch when the wheel is turning. Its position in relation to the rotor is constant when the vehicle is tracking straight or turning. However, a loose or bad bearing might allow the rotor to wooble and make contact with the caliper. I think its your bearing...
Yes i agree...the only thing is that the caliper does have some movement afixed by the two slide bolts that hold the caliper in place.
I just bought the car last week so i'm going to take it back to the dealer and have them figure it out.
Thank you for your help blueovalfan!

Now not only are the brakes squeeling....today i braked for a stop sign and heard a loud grinding and felt it in the brake pedal like the pads are metal on metal. But i know that can't be possible because of the amount of material still on the pads. There's still 3/4 of material left on the pads. The only other thing i guess it could be is that the pads could besemi-metallic and have glazed up.
Does anybody else have an idea?
Thanks

Thebrake pads were shot.
When i removed the wheel i looked at the top of the pads inside the caliper and they looked fine.
But when i looked at the one pad from underneath there was nothing there. It seemed the one pad had worn down on a angle. I replaced the rear pads ($98.00) and noticedwhen i had the caliper off the slide pins that hold the caliper in place weren't sliding back and forth properly. I relubricated them with lithium grease and all is good now!
