dynamometer (dyno) - a device used to measure and adjust an engine’s horsepower and performance.
It's a big (probably 2' round) cylinder that sits horizontal either ground level (in a trench or rackbuilt specifically for it), you pull your cars rear tires on top of it and then it's tethered down to hold it in place. They hookup the Dynamometer to the ODBC port and spin it up slowly and hammer it WOT.
The car goes nowhere but the wheels spin the cylinder that the dynamometer is reading the HP and torque.
They also put an O2 sensor bung up the tailpipe to read the air fuel ratio duringthe dyno.
<edit> added pics. The first is one that is floor level the second is me and some buddies at a dyno that on a rack.

Hey Mango, just so the rest ofus know, what is the going rate for a dyno session? Is a series of tests or one shot? Can they dyno all drives(FWD, RWD, AWD)?
Record Breaker
Hey Randall what you get on there with the juice?????? Around here there are hourly rates or by the pull, some days you can get 3pulls for 45 bucks .You can stop inbetween pulls used a programmer,re-jet or whatever you need to do .

Going rates around here are $35-50 dollars for 3 "pulls".
Dyno tuning can be had for around $150 per hour.
All wheel drive (AWD) support depends on the Dyno facility. My girl friends boy has a WRX and wants to dyno before moding but we haven't found an AWD dyno yet.
I've never seen Front wheel drive dyno but I would imagine it's just like rear wheel drive.

Haven't dynoed on N20 yet, I'm running lean and don't want to chance a blow out [&:]I'm hoping to make changes soon that will help that situation.ORIGINAL: baldyloxs

I haven't checked into hourly rates but I've seen prices posted, once we can tune our cars (HAL & company
) I'll be looking into that. <edit> normally when you block time like that your wanting to dyno tune... lots of tweaks between pulls and getting every bit of HP you can. <end edit>Yep, depending on the dyno schedule it is normally possible to stop between pulls to tweak settings and make changes.
Ok! I know what your talking about now I never know what it was called. I'm gonna have to find a place close by me that does dyno tests
