Default resonators/mufflers/suitcases

Prior to doing any research, I had the muffler shop rip out the big suitcase thing (which they said was a resonator) and replace it with straight pipe. They also replaced the rear mufflers/resonators (which they called mufflers) with flowmaster mufflers. So, now I have straight pipes to rear flowmaster mufflers.

It sounds great from the outside, but the drone in the car is unbearable. My question is what will happen if I put the big suitcase back in the middle and leave the flowmasters in the back?

I don't think anyone on earth has done this as I have searched every forum out there and have come up empty-handed.

Welcome to the forum mukjp2, I read you have the drone blues.

You can put the big thing back in with the flowmasters in the rear and it shouldn't drone.

In my understanding, the suitcase is the muffler and the 2 rear pieces are the resos. When I replaced my exhaust, I got a full kit from magnaflow. It uses a muffler in place of the suitcase and 2 higher flowing resos in the back. I still have a little drone, but all MDS cars will drone with aftermarket exhausts.

Also, you can always drive in autostick mode to eliminate the drone as well.

LOL we had a big thread debate on what the reso & muffler were. That's why I call the muffler a suitcase or big thing
and
the resos the small hand bags in the rear.

I'm not getting suckered into a long debate wasting time about what to call those things.

Problem solved. Someone told me that drone comes from exhaust pipes that don't extend far enough out and release the sound into the bumper. Just looking at it, it wasn't so short that it would be going into the underside of the bumper, but after holding some PVC plastic pipes to it while my wife reved the engine, we noticed a big difference. Today I had the mechanic take off the chrome tips and extend the muffler's pipe a few inches further out. Looks fine, and drone is cut about 70%. Totally bearable now. So, another option to get a good sound from the R/T is to remove the suitcase, replace the two resonators with flowmaster mufflers, and make sure the tailpipes comes back pretty far. Sounds great.

I was thinking about something similar to what was on my '68 R\T to install on my new '09 Charger R\T. Dual B-body mufflers and then pipes our the rear. I haven't measured the clearance yet, but it should sound good if it will work.
