Dodge ChargerThe Dodge Charger. The car that made its competitors shiver in the 60's is reborn in 2006 into a sleek sedan that can still send the competition home wimpering, the Dodge Charger.
If you are going to be replacing some anyway, the questions becomes, how often do you want to do this job?? Don't the heads have to come off to change 'em??
I've been debating this myself. With the bottom end being solid, I don't want to cheap out on the top end and mess it up. But I don't have a lot of money to play with right now.
I'm looking at OEM part number 5038785AD and 5038786AD. A Durango post I read said that these were packaged by 8 lifters. As in, I would need to buy one of each, not two. Can anyone verify this? That would be the ticket!
Looking at 5038785AD, I think that is only four lifters..... so, gonna be almost a grand JUST for lifters??? Holy smokes.
That's why I didn't want to replace them all. I don't want to get rid of MDS, at least not yet. The parts are ordered, I'll keep y'all posted! Hopefully they come with 8 each, we'll see.....

Well, that one specified "right, front", or some such. I am gonna guess it's only four.
So, here's a little update. The lifters came in and they are indeed four to a box. I pulled the heads and then the lifters. I was glad to see no obvious damage to the lifters, but that ended when I scoped the camshaft. This is what I found.
So, I have 8 more lifters and a camshaft on the way. I also discovered my carrier bearing is shot. That is incoming as well. I have to wrap up in a bit and will jump back on it Thursday. I'll keep y'all posted.....
Final update:
The Charger was finally reassembled last Thursday. I left the old filter in but replaced the oil and drove very conservatively for about 200 miles. So far, I have no problems. The carrier bearing was the absolute worst part. It took a vise, an acetylene torch and copious bad words to get the mechanism apart. It took more bad words to get it back together. A one piece driveshaft is definitely in my future.
I ran the misfire test. No more misfires. The MDS system works more smoothly than it used to. I will dump the oil and filter today, then drive as normal.
If someone can weigh in, do you run oil additives? If so, what do you use? I was recommended and used Hot Shot's FR3 Friction Reducer. Since the cam swap and fresh oil, I lost about 1 MPG. IDK if the new parts wearing in or the lack of the additive is the cause.
I hope this helps someone!
