Default New vehicle extended warranty

I'm looking at a new Charger Daytona, replacing my current Charger R/T.
The Dealership's offering an extended warranty 10 years for $4995. Seems a bit much as it's really 7 years (10 years minus the factory 3 year warranty).
I did purchase an extended warranty on my last new car (Ram 2500), broke even with a fuel pump and a power steering leak in years 5 or 6, but it cost a lot less than $4995!
Also, I didn't realize at the time of purchase that is was a third-party warranty, not Chrysler. For about 4 months after purchase Chrysler kept trying to sell me their warranty.
I tend to keep vehicles for 7-10 years. If this new car has $5k of issues in the first three years I'm selling it and moving on.

Anyone buy a new Dodge/Jeep/Ram in the last year or so?
Did you buy the extended warranty?
Was it from the dealership (third party) or from Chrysler?
How much did it cost?
Would you recommend?

Thanks,
Rattlecan

The first three years are already covered, it's the next several you should be concerned with. Given the complexity of todays cars, and the fact that most technicians (and I use the term loosely) are just parts changers...... as they can't actually figger out what a problem REALLY is caused by, except by sheer luck..... labor rates have gone up, EVERYTHING is more expensive, so, that 5 grand may seem cheap when the factory warranty expires, and some electrical gremlin rears it's ugly head.... or the trans goes out..... It really wouldn't take much for a repair to hit that five grand..... and if that is a chrysler warranty, it works nation wide, with no up-front cost to you. If it's a third party warranty, I wouldn't pay that much.

That, and I am a firm believer in the warranty lasting longer than the payments.......

I have a 2019 Journey. 30,000 miles. I just talked with the dealer about my "extended warranty" and was told it expired in 2024. My question is how do I find out
about said warranty without going to the finance person at the dealer? An example of a question I have is didn't the extended warranty kick in after the manufacturers
warranty expire? Thank you in advance. Joe.

Hey You makes some good points but, extended warranties are offered because “they” are making money on it. That means we aren’t. The odds of coming out ahead are against us. Warranties are a form of insurance and I’d have a lot more money in the bank if I never bought insurance. I’ll take my chances thank you.

At one point in time, GM offered a 'lifetime extended warranty'. A guy that traveled for work bought an AWD astro van, and paid for the warranty. He put over 1 million miles on that van, several motors, a few transmissions, couple transfer case, and a rear axle or three, along with a THICK pile of minor issues, over the course of about 8 years.... GM lost their **** on that one..... Which is why it was only offered for maybe two years.....

That said, back in the day, when cars were FAR easier to diagnose/fix, (like, you didn't need a 4000 dollar computer just to talk to it....) sure, extended warranties were indeed a waste of money. Repairs were generally reasonably priced, cars weren't nearly some complicated, and labor rates were lower.... These days though, a friggin' taillight is over 1000 dollars, I haven't see a labor rate under 100 an hour for quite some time, and the level of complication in something as simply as a power window switch simply boggles the mind. In this day and age, it won't take many trips to the dealer to make up that 5 grand for the extended warranty. It's possible you could hit that in ONE visit..... Which is truly scary.

You get no argument from me and if that’s where you’re comfort level is then go for it with no hesitation. And maybe that’s what it’s all about, comfort level. Maybe five grand is a lot but once you write the cheque you’re done and you rest easier for the next ten years. Damn, I’m starting to talk myself into it! Hahaha.
