Newbie Questions....
Hi everyone. I'm new to the Forum, and have a few questions.
One of the guys at work has a new vehicle that he was "opening up" on the Interstate highway a few weeks back. He said that when he got it to 90mph, it started "holding back", like the computer was starving it of fuel - not shutting it down, but not allowing any more speed. Sounds to me like a computer controlled speed limiter.
My wife has a three month old Charger R/T - 5.7L Hemi. We've had it on a few trips, but haven't really had a chance to "open it up" yet. It's her first new car and she's very protective of it. She's a bit concerned with me potentially "hurting it" (LOL). She won't let me put the FlowMaster or Borla exhaust system on it - she doesn't want it too loud. We've averaged 25mpg on the trip(s) with ESP turned off.......pretty good (I think) for a 345 Hemi V-8.
My questions:
Should I expect a similar "top speed limiter" to rear it's ugly head on the Charger? IF SO, how can that be disabled?
Also, I've seen a few threads on "performance chips" and programming them. What's the best chip/program for the 5.7L Hemi in the Charger R/T that won't sacrifice too much fuel mileage?
Thanks in advance!

Welcome 08ChallengerDad you have a nice car in the family!
Yes you R/T has a limiter, I believe the stardard R/T is 135mph. Once you take the R/T on open road and open it up you'll love it and unless you or your wife is a real speed freak you will not hit the limiter.
There's several products to choose from. SuperChips flashpaq allows you to tune various things. HyperTech also has a "tuner" but it's very limited compared to SuperChips. These two products flash the car's computer program.
Jet produces two difffernt Chips (stage I and II) that plugges between the PCM and wiring (CANBus).
Both programmers and chip provide updated air/fuel ratio "maps", ignition advance and various other tuning points that will provide performance gains.
The hottest one going right now is the SuperChips flashpaq.

Thanks, guys. I appreciate the info.
Hopefully, a lot of what I learn here can be applied to the '08 Challenger as well. That was the deal......
my wife needed a new car, so I agreed to the Charger R/T she chose (I made it sound like it was a tough decision...LOL) ON THE CONDITION that when the '08 Challenger comes out, I can trade my '01 Cruiser in on one (of course I'll HAVE to have a bigger Hemi than her 5.7L).
She's not a speed freak, but I am. Luckily, I don't race "for real" (real cars) any more. I "sim race" on the PC. It's MUCH cheaper, hurts less when I wreck/get wrecked, and doesn't affect my insurance rates.
Thanks again for the info.

Too cool 08ChallengerDad, I had the same thing going with my GF but now she’s talken the Caliber SRT4 when they come out. I may have to wait on the Challenger. Either way I’ll have fun moding it, whatever it happens to be
Welcome to the forum, ChallengerDad.
I have the Daytona model, with a Jet 2 chip, K&N 63 series cold air intake, and Magnaflow rear tips. I get 25 MPG at 75 MPH on the interstate, and run a 14.04 in the quarter.
Look around several posts in here. Lots of info. Chargin69 wrote about the Jet 2 chip and the Superchips programmer. My Jet 2 was half the price, but the SC is internet upgradeable for new progams. I haven't seen slips from just changing the programming and running them to see which is best. Of course, opinions are opinions -- I want proof.
I have to admit I'm abit like your wife. I love my new Daytona and am not hard on it. I have had it to 125 but that is all I can tell you -- the car feels fine around that speed. Personally I don't know if the chip unlocks the speed limiter or not...
Be careful of exhaust mods. This is a real touchy subject and subject to your personal desires. I say be careful because the engine is actually two engines -- a V8 that runs like a V4 in MDS mode. That is where many guys expierence DRONE through out the cabin area. I'll leave it at that. Read about it in the forum. I had a bad expierence with the Magnaflow system. Also, the system is different from your R/T to my Daytona, and some posters feel the drone isn't significant in their R/T models. Good luck with the whole subject on that!
Enjoy the car and have fun here on the forum.
