I'm hoping this is a simple carb problem. I'm working on my first american car. It's a 1949 special deluxe. I have no problems starting the car but if it doesn't go the first time I can't seem to get it going. If I 'm driving the car and need to stop I can't get it to restart. A couple times I have had guys putting there hands over the carb to completely close it off and had some luck after along time, causing the wires to smoke.

Any suggestions on what this could be?
