Default Dodge AT4

Hi all, I have just become the owner of a Dodge AT4. I am wondering what all the numbers mean that I find on it...

I have AT4 - model??
1/329 - 1088 - ???
SOA A088 - ???

It is a Dodge "Job Rated" Trucks from South Australia Limited in Australia
I think its a 1963/64 model and has been well restored and converted to 4wd

Any help would be greatly appreciated
Cheers
It has Dual wheels if that helps

Default Dodge AT4 ID numbers and model designation info

I know this thread was posted ages ago but my reply might help anyone else who needs to figure out what the model numbers mean on Dodge AT4. Well firstly AT4 stands for Australian Truck Series 4, much the same way as an AP2, AP5 etc stands for "Australian Production" chryslers e.g aussie chrysler royal (AP2) and aussie chrysler valiants (AP5 AP6).

Ok, the model numbers are as follows. Your example Dodge AT4 329 , the 329 - first digit tonnage, second and third are wheelbase + 100"......i.e 3 tonner with 129" wheelbase. Another example, Dodge AT4 575 is a 5 tonner with 175" wheelbase, AT4 114 is a 1 tonner with 114" wheelbase. Commers used a similar system.

For models from 460 up, AT4-460 for example would indicate a V8 engine and AT4-460-6 would indicate it was a 6 cylinder version.
From this we can deduce that an AT4 690 is a 6 tonner with a 190" wheelbase (and V8 engine). Also, an AT4 760D would indicate a 7 tonner, 160" wheelbase and Diesel engine (D for diesel).

The 225 slant six engine was available from 1962 and was replaced by the Hemi 245 in 1970 and used in AT4 114, 129, 229, 329, 353, 460-6, 475-6, 560-6, 575-6.

The 313 V8 Poly engine was used from 1962 to 1964 and replaced in 1965 by the 318 V8. V8 engines were used in AT4-460, 475, 560, 575, 660, 675, 690.

The Perkins 6.354 (6 cyl 354 cid Diesel) was available as an option on AT4 660, 675, 690.

The 361 V8 and Cummins 160 (6 cyl 464 cid 160HP diesel) were only available in AT4 760 and 775

This info came from an AT4 parts catalogue with model identification that was kindly sent to me. Production of the AT4 ran from 1962 to about 1972 when replaced by the single headlight D5N... D5N i think simply stands for Dodge series 5, N-normal control (bonnetted truck). The D2F was the dodge version of the Commer after chrysler took over Rootes Group (series 2, F- Forward control)...and these were available with 361 V8 and Cummins 185 (470 cid V8 diesel)...but we digress! hehe. The D might have also coincided with the D series internationals as dodge and inter shared the same cabs and were built at the chrysler factory at South Australia from 1962 onwards as has been mentioned in other posts.

I'm actually in the process of producing models of the AT4 series in kit form in 1/43rd scale. They will be of the AT4 560-6 as a 6 cyl (225 cid) table top and AT4 775 (361 V8) single drive prime mover (a common configuration for these). Prime movers had shortened wheelbases.

Hope this info helps. I'm also researching paint codes for the AT4 so that the models can be painted in authentic original or fleet colours, so if anyone has any info please post them, especially the aussie code for Dodge truck Red.

The codes i have so far are :

8623 - white

7239 - green/aqua

13211 - a fleet colour, i think it was telecom orange?

5259 - Dodge Truck Green

7238 - ?

Default At4 114

Hi just bought a 'restored' AT4 with a 318 on gas.Pick up tomorrow in Wollongong just south of Sydney, Australia.

Will be looking at suspension mods and steering as well as a later model turbo diesel engine. That will be down the track...Has anyone any suggestions on front end upgrades? Disc brake, improved steering (power assisted) etc as want to make it less truck like.

Also suggestions on gearbox and diff swaps again to make it less truck like. I will be using this regularly with trips down to the coast. 300km's each way.

Great site.

All suggestions appreciated.

Default At4

I read your comments with great interest I too wish to have power steering on my AT4. I find with our cars with it and now my boat has P/S the Dodge without it being very annoying especially when maneuvering the boat at the ramp and at home.
If any one can help with the power steering it would be greatly appreciated. I know it is a major turn off for the owners of these classic trucks. Many a time I have heard that the steering was the main facture in trading in the truck.
My AT4 had a slant 6 that used as much oil as fuel so I replaced the engine and gearbox with a 302 Ford motor and a 4 speed gearbox. It made the truck a different vehicle and must admit it much better to drive and cheaper to maintain. I am now looking to upgrade to a fuel injected 302. I get 23miles to the gallon or 9 liters per hour slightly less when loaded and towing the boat.

Default Re AT4 steering upgrades

Hi guys, newbie here in Adelaide, SA, just bought an AT4, 318 c.in,(i think), lowered, dual rears, extractors, lumpy cam, on LPG with 3 inch twin system, all black, sounds and looks mean, it also 'chirps' the tyres real easy in 2nd gear take off if I'm not careful. With regards steering this one has an HQ - HZ manual steering box bolted to the chassis rail, pretty sloppy so will be replaced. I figure if a Holden box can handle it, it can probably take the same thing but in a power steer one instead, from an HQ up to a WB Statesman, all the boxes were the same and are easy to come by. The WB s/man was reasonably heavy so should be able to handle the Dodge weight okay.

Micheloaks,
I am a new owner of an AT4-114, Bought it for $2000. https://dodgeforum.com/forum/members...t-project.html

Just wondering what yours is worth, and do you know anyone with spare badges for it, mine seems to be de-baged. Mainly looking for the long one which goes onto the door.

Default AT4 Parts

HI Dennis

congrats on the buy - what is the body condition and interior like? Is it a runner?

For a couple of reasons mine had to be sold though for 14.5k.

For parts I would ring Cowra truck spares as they seem t have a collection also there is a good chrysler val dodge inter guy called Jim in Victoria who may be able to help - currently forget his business name, another Pentastar in QLD.

I would also advise to get on to MOPAR MARKET FORUM - OZ based forum hence you will also likely get a response re: need for spares. Ditto EBAY

I see these almost everywhere I go on farms, runners or not - so parts at the moment will not be too hard.

As for power steering looked at it for a long time - one thing to remember is that almost all approaches to this will A require some engineering approval and B. likely result i the truck being de rated in terms of its capacity - so again depends on your intent. I assume you are going to use this for pleasure not work. Though if I get another it will be having Psteer on it.

I agree also re: V8 on gas - if you get to put one in do it.

Cheers

Michel

Its actually all good mate, body is great, only minor rust in wheel arches, and their slant6 motor (the original) **** itself and they put a 245 hemi (which is a 6), and a Borg-Warner 3 speed auto box in it.
runs like a dream and new exhaust system in it too.
