I have inherited an old Dodge 500 truck (along with a 1948 Ford F-6) that belonged to my grandfather's lumber company back in the 60s or 70s. It's been parked up on their property for around 40 years, so I'm sure it needs a full rebuild before it's operational, but it was running when it was parked there so it should be complete. I have some interest in continuing to identifying it, and possibly in restoring it. I figured if I threw it up on the forum I might get some advice on what year it is, what engine, etc... And whether it's worth my time to restore, or what it might be worth. Being parked for 40 years, it may have low original miles... Odometer says 31,270 but it may have rolled over.

It's branded as a Dodge 500, so I'm fairly sure it's from the 60s. Probably an early Cummins diesel engine? One of those old diesel engines that'll go for 900,000 miles?

It has a two-speed axle shift. Looks to have a 4-speed manual transmission.

Can anyone tell me anything about it?

I didn't spot one in the engine bay yet. I didn't find one anywhere in the cab. On my '48 Ford F-6 it's in the glove box, but it wasn't there on this Dodge.

 

According to theory, it *should* be at the base of the windshield, on the drivers side...... Or.... possible on the drivers side, under the hood, on the cowl, or just below the drip rail there, on the firewall.

 

I am Jonny come lately and maybe you have found it all ready but looking at body style it looks to me like late 50s maybe 58 -59, but I am not an expert. I have just spend a lot of time looking at pictures and have have a 1960 D100. The vin on mine (not actually a vin back then but more of a serial #) was on the rear side drivers door pillar on a tag but it had been hit by the door so many times with sloppy hinges it was un-readable. I found the number on the frame just above the front side spring shackle on the front drivers side. If all else fails you might find it there. It will probably take some clean up with a wire brush and or a piece of sand paper.
