Unhappy 1955 Hemi Engine and PowerFlite Transmission dies on stops and stalls on take-off

I have an engine stall problem with my 1955 Dodge Royal lancer with a 270 Hemi Engine and PowerFlite Transmission. When I come to a stoplight, the engines dies in one minute unless I put it into neutral and press the gas pedal to fast idle. When I put it in drive and pull away from a stop light, it jerks on take-off (unless it stalls altogether). If it can manage to take-off from a stopped position (rare), it runs OK at 35 mph city streets, or 55 mph highway, but not much power. When I put it in neutral and race the engine to 2000 to 2500 rpm, it runs OK. I had a Mechanic adjust the idle screw mixtures and the fast idle, but he could not solve the problem. He said he timed it but I can't be sure it was done right. Cylinder compression is 95-110 psi and intake manifold vacuum is 14-16 Hg. I put a new carburetor, points, condenser, distributor cap, coil. spark plugs, but none of these actions cured the problem. It still dies and/or stalls on stops and take-offs. What is wrong? What do I do now? Your comments and suggestions please. -- Richard H. Dodge,

It's not wise to leave your phone and e mail address. It's not what forums are about.
Does this happen when the engine is hot? Sounds like a vapor lock issue.

Angry Engine stalls, sputters, dies on stop and take-off.

It happens when the vehicle is cold or hot, startup or in-stream driving. I don't think it is vapor lock. -- Richard

Sound like it may be a fuel delivery issue, Check the pressure after the fuel pump. Might want to put a timing light on the coil wire to see if it keeps firing when the issue occurs.

Do you have single or dual points? Still running 6 volt positive ground? Try spraying water or WD-40 around the edges of the intake where it meets the heads and again where the carburetor meets the intake. Hook a vacuum gauge to it and watch what it does when it wants to stall. Are you running the original exhaust?

I'd hook the vacuum gauge before you try spritzing water around the intake. It might be something as simple as a mouse nest in the exhaust pipe or a internally rusted muffler. This is the kind of equipment I trained on in the 1960's and 70's.
