Just bought a 2000 Dakota Quad Cab-and love it! but- I just noticed that if you hit a hard bump or pothole at highway speeds the truck really jumps and steering jerks, almost feels like you could lose control. I researched before I bought and found about about the ball joints recall, but supposedly this had been done. Any help?
I'd say that's normal, hell if I had ever hit a pothole at highway speeds with my last car it probably would have been totaled (Acura Integras and potholes don't get along).
Its cause our shocks suck! My 04 road over pot holes like they weren't even there....my 05 and bounces all over the place. Personally I think they went backwards with the new model....
It's called bump steer. You need more positive caster. If the top balljoint is not a couple degrees back from the bottom one it will steer like a gocart. Or if you put a big lift kit in and now the steering linkage is to far out of parellel.
