They are useless against "instant on" radar which many cops use. The cops just drive down the street or see someone driving and they push the button........if you're speeding, you'll get caught. Your detector will go off, but it's too late to react.

Your only hope is they "target" another car near you and you get a reflected signal to warn you in time that cops are in the area.....

Around here, most of them just sit on the side of the road or park behind a bus stop sign and sit outside with a radar gun. I just want to know from experience with them, what ones you guys recommend. I live outside the city, around the country side and they park in the ditch and sit there with a gun, very rarely have I seen them coming the other way and get someone. Only really happens on the highway, they just tail you and hope that you don't notice them, then flick the lights on. I understand where your coming from. But wouldn't that mean that they would have to be doing the speed limit and have their radar on at the same time. Because if their doing 100kph in an 80kph zone and they drive by you while your doing 80, obviously that might screw up their gun with the calculation of how fast your going

Just a story I thought I'd share (FORD got what was comin)
One day I was driving and this big ford f-350 just flys by me, im doing 80, and he must have been doing 100, heswitches lanes over, then back into mine. 2 seconds up the road was a cop, flicked his lights on pulled him over, as I drove by I stuck my hand out the window and said "good luck ". Speeding ticket and passing in a no passing zone.

I've heard everything from police leaving their radar/laser off until they see a fast car (by the time your detector goes off, it's too late) to certain areas purposely flooding problem areas with radar/laser (your detector is always going off, so you start to ignore it).

At the end of the day, a radar detector is better than no radar detector. I'm sure someone will say "Just don't speed and it's not a problem", but aside from that, having some ability (no matter how small) to detect speed traps in advance is better than having none. If you do get caught, having a radar detector is a sure way to always get a ticket instead of a warning, so make sure you get one you can grab and throw under the seat in a hurry.

What you need to do is wander into a truck stop in the middle of the night and then ask several of the truckers. They can tell you what to use.

I use the escort solo S2. Its battery operated so no cords. within the first 2 months this thing paid for itself in tickets I would have gotten.

Granted a radar detector does not mean you can go flying down the road and be safe from police radar. But if youre going just slightly faster than traffic and a cop pings you, most of the time you can just hit your brakes and the cop will leave you alone.

The passport series are some of the best detectors on the market right now. They even have an available laser shifter as an add-on. It scrambles the laser signal making it un-readable by the cop. my cordless detector loses some range with the batteries versus a wired one but it still does just fine and I can use it on the motorcycle too.

This one from Beltronics appears to be the "ultimate":

Maybe If I had a lambo i'd get one of those. I don't see the point in the scramble part though. I think the cops can tell the difference between 80kph and 180kph. Nice find though

but its kinda hard to visually tell the difference between 60mph and 75mph. that and if the officer couldnt get an accurate reading you have a much better chance of beating it in court
