Red face Sorry, noob question on CAI

If I understand it right, the idea for a cold air intake is to bring cold air into the engine. My question is this, I have a 2005 3.7L v6. It looks to me like the stock air box has a duct leading to the front of the vehicle. Wouldn't this bring COLD AIR into the engine without having to install/build a CAI? or am I missing something?

basically the cai improves the flow of air to your engine

the stock intake has alot more restriction
